The Mississippi Center for Nonprofits is the state’s only nonprofit management training and resource center. For the thousands of nonprofit organizations across the state, the Center is the primary source of management training, technical information, advice, answers, coaching and connection to vital resources. Our mission is to strengthen the capacity of the nonprofit sector to serve the people and communities in Mississippi. We believe we work best when we work together, hence we encourage and foster statewide networking and collaborations among nonprofits.

The Center will ensure that Mississippi's nonprofit sector be considered "best in class" in the United States by providing efficient and effective services that enable Mississippi nonprofits to better fulfill their missions; by being the pre-eminent knowledge resource for Mississippi nonprofits through expert staff, networking, marketing and communications; by becoming the leading advocate for Mississippi's nonprofit sector; by providing abundant resources to enable the Center and its members to fulfill our missions on an extraordinary level; and to engage and inspire nonprofit organizations to strengthen their capacity to better serve the people and communities of Mississippi.

Mississippi Center for Nonprofits Facts & Statistics

The Mississippi Center for Nonprofits is the state's only nonprofit management training and resource center.  For nonprofit organizations across the state, the Center is the primary source of management training, technical information, advice, answers and connections to vital resources. Our mission is to strengthen the capacity of the nonprofit sector to serve the people and communities of Mississippi. The Center was incorporated on August 18, 1992, led by the efforts of Keith Parsons (who currently serves on the board), Jo G Prichard and Nathan Woodliff-Stanley and with help from a $25,000 start-up grant from the National Council of Nonprofits and the Phil Hardin Foundation.Each year, the Center offers over 50 workshops based on our Principles & Practices for Nonprofit Management Excellence.  In addition to the workshops, the Center offers one statewide annual conference and an avent at the Mississippi State Capitol.The Center currently has over 320 members that employ over 1,500 people and have a network of over 10,000 volunteers.

The Center provides answers and assistance to over 3,000 calls and emails each year from nonprofits across Mississippi.

Since 1992, the Center has trained over 7,000 nonprofit professionals in the areas of planning and purpose, board governance, human resources, financial management, transparency and accountability, public policy and advocacy, information and technology, strategic alliances and programmatic effectiveness.

In 2010, the Center launched the Excellence in Action (EIA) initiative which is a nonprofit competencies certification program that allows nonprofit board members and employees to be certified based on Principles & Practices for Nonprofit Management Excellence. EIA is currently a three-year program funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Sector Data

There are 5,890 charities operating in the state of Mississippi. Of those charities, 3,434 are registered with the Mississippi Secretary of State and 2,456 are exempt from reporting requirements. These figures do not include churches who are exempt from registration and reporting requirements. (2011 Charity Guide, Mississippi Secretary of State).
